Things you should know before starting a podcast

Updated: May 1, 2021

The media world has grown tremendously throughout the year. There is so much content around from blogs to social media comics to videos and so much more. The amount of content we have online is ever-growing, and for today's topic, I wanted to focus on Podcasts. Podcasts are one of my favorite forms of entertainment because just like music it focuses on the audio aspect as opposed to the visual. When you are busy, doing homework or something that requires your attention, putting on a podcast can make it feel like having a friend with you. According to my notes from one of my courses, “Podcasting was still a novelty in 2004 when a former MTV host wrote the code that made the medium what it is today”.

While like always I will be providing infographics for today's post, I asked one of the first people I spoke to before going to college to answer questions about her podcast journey. Izzy is an extremely kind-hearted and energetic person who recently started her podcast. Don’t forget to check out her podcast, main Instagram, fashion Instagram, podcast Instagram, Tik Tok, and Youtube channel.

Me: Hi Izzy, thank you so much for being a guest on my blog. The best way I think we can start this blog is, Can you give 5 facts about you?

Izzy: Hi Alayjah! Thank you for having me! Here are some five facts about me! I’m an Advertising and Marketing major at FIT, I grew up around performing arts such as dance, singing, acting, etc, I started dancing when I was 2 years old up to my senior year, I’m a huge K-pop fan (I can suggest some groups if you want to get to know me!) and I love fashion!

Me: What inspired you to make a podcast?

Izzy: Many things inspired me to start a podcast! I decided to start a podcast through friends at FIT! I started listening to podcasts probably around October and first I was hesitant to start one at first because I didn’t have the key points to start one but I asked my friends who had one and asked for some advice and they were such a huge help to me! Because of that, I was able to put a podcast together and I’m so excited to start one!

Me: Can you give us a description of your podcast? Do you have any special segments planned?

Izzy: So my podcast is named $hits & giggles w/ Izzy! The name is probably explicit to most people but the name describes my personality as a person! It describes how I went through a lot in the past, but when I reflect on it they’re all about the giggles because it shows how I grew as a person! My podcast is about knowing me as a person and probably there is some stuff that you didn’t know about me as well. It’s a mixture of my interests such as fashion, K-pop, etc., and reflecting my life before FIT. I plan to release a new episode every Wednesday at 3 pm so feel free to tune in! I might plan to do special segments such as featuring other friends on my podcast but we’ll see!

Me: How has being a FIT student impact the structure of your podcast?

Izzy: So far, this has impacted me just by being inspired by other people. I tried to get somewhat of an idea of how others structured their podcast and from that inspiration, I tried to somewhat do something similar but obviously in my creative way. I’m also the type of person to do self-promo so promoting my podcast is important and I want people to know that my podcast is a safe space and everyone is welcomed to tune in!

Me: You have a lot of platforms that you create on (podcast, YouTube, TikTok, etc.) What is your favorite platform to make content on and Why?

Izzy: I used all my platforms almost every day to post something but I think my two favorite platforms to post on would either be Instagram or TikTok. Mostly because I am the type of person to show off all fits on both platforms so anyone can be inspired or find any fit ideas!

Me: What has been the most challenging part of making a podcast?

Izzy: I think the most challenging part of making a podcast was the type of content I was going to put. I still struggle with it when making up what content that everyone wants to listen to, but in the end, I always find a way to put together content for everyone to listen to and stay entertained!

Me: Do you have any goals for your podcast this year?

Izzy: To be honest, I don’t have goals for my podcast which might sound surprising to everyone. I just created this podcast so everyone can listen to it and enjoy it! This podcast was mostly made for those who want to get to know me as a person, and I can talk more about my interests on my podcast!

Me: Do you have any role models or anyone who inspires you? If so, who are they and why?

Izzy: This is one of the many questions I get a lot but yes in fact I do! I’m starting with the group BTS which I’m sure you have heard but it’s okay if you haven’t! BTS is my role model and they are the reasons why I am who I am today. They taught me to love myself and that it is okay to have up and downs in life. One of the quotes that one of the members has said that stood by me is: “Live your life, it’s yours anyways. Don’t try too hard; it’s okay to lose.” -Jeon Jungkook of BTS. The only reason I motivate myself to do things in life is because of BTS. They speak on issues about things we face today that many people do not mostly talk about through music. I’m thankful to look up to these seven men.

Me: What’s something you’re excited about?

Izzy: There are many things that I get excited about such as new music releases, concerts, and many more but I’m excited about my future. I want a career that is related to public relations because a class I took last semester made me want to pursue that career. Of course, I have to work hard to get to my goal, but I know all my hard work will pay off.

Me: What advice do you have for people who want to start a podcast or something similar?

Izzy: I’m not good at advice, but I can say that go for it! If you are inspired to make one and if you are determined, go for it! Make your podcast about something that will make people happy when they have a bad day! The most important part is to be yourself, and that’ll have people engaged with what content you put on your podcast!

That is all for today. It is always fun for me to do collaborative posts, and I’m not sure when the next one will be, but I’m hoping to have many in the future. Thank you for taking the time to read. Don’t forget to like, comment, and share. Remember to subscribe to my Youtube channel, and follow my Instagram and Twitter to connect and stay up to date. I am excited about next week's blog post so make sure you come back next Saturday. Until then, there’s a lot more content on my youtube channel. I hope you have a good day, evening or night.

Until next time,

xoxo Lay 💋

I have been discussing the idea of a podcast with my sisters as we think it would be a great idea to put ourselves out there, so this post has just been shared with them and hopefully we'll start it soon! Thank you for sharing x
