#2: The Icon of the month

Updated: Jun 12, 2020

Hey guys!

It's Lay.

I did this about a month ago but I don't remember if I explained how it works. I had people ask me if all the Icon of the month will always be female. So in case you are new or didn't know, Icon of the month was originally only supposed to about their style. However after the first one I wrote, in the process I wanted to talk about what else makes them admirable along with my favorite outfits from them. So since this is my first time doing a segment like this, It will progress with time but for now it is starting with females I admire.

With all that being said the Icon of the month of February is Selena Gomez. I've been a major fan of Selena Gomez since her Alex Russo days but she has come a long way since then. Most recently her album Rare came out January 10th and I've been listening to it nonstop since. It was one of her most raw and emotional albums because it tells a story of highs and lows, cutting people off, heart break... emotions we all experience at least at one point of our lives. Selena Gomez is absolutely one of the most relatable celebrities and that shows in her style. Like last time, I'm going to choose 10 looks I love from her instagram account.

Selena's Fashion

Selena Gomez in 2016 was the most followed person and it clear to see why. She has such a timeless beauty vibe to her and her post sometimes are a very vintage aesthetic. What I love about her style, is for the most part you can recreate her looks and it's so refreshing to not see all celebrities wearing extravagant styles. She is gorgeous inside and out and throughout the years showed support for many causes.

Using her voice

What I admire most about her is she's able to speak her mind. She definitely isn't shy about how she views things and uses her platform to speak about what she believes in. Whether you agree or disagree with what she believes in, it is so brave for anyone to speak out on what we believe in because in this society where media is a huge part of our lives people will share there opinions in a way that is disrespectful or people would reply to something in a way that is disrespectful. One thing people seem to forget is how we view the world is strictly based on perception because families passes down different values, people come from different worlds in the sense some grew in poverty and others didn't , some had 2 parents and others didn't and some had healthy examples of love and other saw abuse. Religion, family, wealth, geography, race etc. all forms are beliefs, our morals and most importantly our identity.

As humans, we need to work on: understanding differences, stop judging a person on appearances, stop thinking stereotypes are the truth and having more respect because even if something isn't an issue for you, it could be an issue for someone else for

a good reason.

Her work with 13 reasons why also is an example of her advocacy. Even though it is known to be controversial, it raised awareness on things that are faced in everyday lives: thoughts of depression, bullying, teenage rage, school shooting scares, drug abuse, complicated relationships etc.

Those are things that should be address and it's a shame how some people took the show. Even at my own school, these girls who were more like the stereotypical girls who were mostly cheerleaders, felt entitled because they were the type of girls who the sporty guys would go after and talk about their friends in the most disgusting way. Funny enough I used to be friends with some of them but I'm happy that I took a step back instead of changing myself to fit in. I remember being in class and two girls (One who I was friends with in middle school and the other one I associated with but didn't know that well) were joking around and one of the girl told the other "kill yourself" and they both started laughing. Even though they were joking, those are things you shouldn't joke about because you don't know how someone would actually take it and the fact there were always more people who struggled with depression and thoughts of suicide (as well as possibly attempting) than people think... I used to be one of those people but I'm actually happy I stuck around. I'm proud to say I'm here showing what it's like to be in a better place after years of feeling like I shouldn't. I'm happy to have the friends I have. I'm happy to be surrounded with support through people I love and even strangers.

Also remember if you or someone you know is struggling use the national suicide hotline (1-800-273-8255

Moral of the story: Be careful with your words

Her own story

Selena Gomez went through her own journey. From being diagnosed with Lupus a few years ago, to having to take a break from social media and her complicated love life; Selena has come a long way. I love how she took her experiences and turn it into something so beautiful and positive. She uses her story to inspire others and honestly uses it to show her views. As a person, she is such a kind soul and definitely a humanitarian that kills with kindness (the only way is should be). All this alone makes her an icon along her beautiful sense of style.

Remember to be kind and honestly keep streaming Rare because there is something on it for everyone. It is fun, empowering, sensual and just amazing in every way. Reading some of the comments on twitter were so disappointing because sharing your story isn't petty or immature, it is simply telling the story of one point of your life and some people need to use their voice as apart of their healing. If she has a tour for this album me and one of my college besties want to go so badly.

So that's all for this week and if you enjoy this series please like, comment and share so I know to keep continuing with it. I really like doing this type of blog post because I learn more about the people I admire and it's a different format of writing to play with that's more similar to what I'm going to school for.

Also check out other parts of my blog such as my gallery to motivate you and to learn more about me. I hope you are having an amazing morning, day, night etc. whatever time you are reading this and I hope you continue this year with so much happiness, self love and excitement.

Until next time,

xoxo Lay 💋
