It is common for YouTubers and bloggers to create content consistently for days straight in December (Vlogmas/Blogmas) and October (YouTober/ Blogtober). Unfortunately, as a college student, those months are the busiest due to around October being midterms and December being finals in the Fall semester.
Blogging challenges are amazing because it allows you to explore your creativity and challenge yourself to dive into writing styles that you don’t normally commit to.
Since I’ve been away so long as a content creator and my start as a blogger this year wasn’t the way I planned I want to start a new blogging challenge annually for February Called “Blogintines”. You can join me and create your own guide but here is why I chose February for my own content challenge and the meaning behind it for my wellness blog.
Reasons why February is the best month for a challenge
1. The origin of the word February
February like other months was adapted from the Roman calendar. Februarius originated from the Latin word “februum” which means “to cleanse” or “purification. Based on research, there was a ritual called Februa held on February 15.
Metaphorically I think this is significant because we end the year with Christmas which is now more commercial even though it’s supposed to be a religious holiday and during the month of December people are worried about: “How to make Christmas special for my family”, “Who do I need to get gifts for”, “I need to get ready to reset for New Years”, “What should be my New Years goals be” etc.
In short: December ends with this overwhelming thought and January begins with people doing what they think they need to do and getting brushed in with the buzz as opposed to creating sustainable change. By February you know what is realistic for you and what you want to continue to do. So in a sense, you cleanse your thoughts that are probably being pushed on you to see what can really work for you.
2. It is a better month for bloggers who are in college to participate
Typically most colleges start mid to late January but due to the rise of covid cases, most colleges either began online or the start date was pushed back to February.
This pushback means February will still be light enough work-wise to participate.
3. Valentine's day provokes a lot of various reactions
Valentines is that “holiday” that you either love or hate. As someone who is a hopeless romantic, I can say that it used to make me sad because I had so much love in my heart and I wasn’t able to really see that the day isn’t just about romantic love. As I matured, my perspective of Valentine’s Day changed. I also feel like the holiday itself gives opportunities to talk about topics in wellness like different types of love, love languages, the impacts of different relationships on others and so much more.
Relationship content is something I enjoy writing about because relationships are unavoidable and as social creatures, I believe some guidance on community identity vs self-identification is so important to the wellness journey.
4. It is a historical month due to it being Black history month and includes Presidents Day
I know I mention Valentine’s Day first but that is mostly because of the name chosen. February as a month holds a lot of historical contexts that I believe will be important to post more about in the future. If you are a person who is interested in history or has an understanding of the impacts of it, creating content like this would be very valuable.
I want to be able to eventually create content that inspires and makes people feel more connected so eventually, I would want to dive deeper into this content in the future.
How this challenge is working
For 14 days (February 1st to February 14th) create micro (blog post 3-5 minutes)content that you enjoy or that’s something within your niche. If you’re a good blog you can do a dessert series, lifestyle can do DIY decor, or great finds on a budget. Beauty can do themed of make-up looks. The possibilities are endless.
As a wellness blog and since it is my first time doing something I want to possibly do as an annual thing, I want to explore my personal structure before I dive into deeper topics. I decided I wanted to focus on love because writing about feelings and relationships are some of my favorite topics and I want to save the deeper topics for when I’m comfortable with this and not just getting back to writing.
